How do I switch back to a call when using call waiting?

So I need help with call waiting. If I am on a call, and someone calls me, I can answee that call, which should put the other call on hold. When I complete the second call, how on earth do I switch back to that first call? If I end the first call, it seems to end both calls. So if I am on hold (or was just on hold for a long time) for a customer service, and I ask them to hold for a second because I have an incoming call, how do I get back to customer service on thE other call. Or am I SOL and have to call again? It's really frustrating.

Honestly I never seem to catch when a second call comes in for me if I'm already on a call. I figured that's what voicemail is for.

the send key takes you back to the 1st call.  i tell the 2nd caller i'm on the phone.
