use verizon contract droid with 80$ monthly prepay?

I've been asking this question for a while around town, and have googled it a few times but always find a thread full of people giving advice based on what they assume, opposed to what they know.  My question is this:  Can a person take a SMARTPHONE (android, for example), which USED TO BE on a contract (though is no longer), and put it on the 80$ monthly smartphone prepay plan?  I know already that smartphones cannot be put on texting bundles or the 50$ unleashed plan. 

follow up:  if it IS possible, is there a list of accepted models while others are excluded? i saw mention of that elsewhere and am looking to confirm.
