My contacts list has been replaced with all unknowns, how do i recover

A few days ago, I noticed that my entire contacts list had been replaced with all unknowns. I looked on line, and went to the cloud only to discover that only part of the list was on the cloud.  Seems that the "automatic" back-up is a farce.  Still I would like to recover at least that part of the list.

Which cloud are you referring to? Verizon, Google, another email account?

Which phone model do you have?

i find gmail contacts extremely easy to use & can be synced to all devices.

i see no need for any cloud to retain contacts.
