my iphone won't keep me connected to internet

I use Google chat to text people. It is continually disconnecting me. I didn't have this problem with my Droid.  Anytime anyone sends me a text it goes to my gmail and then I get it like 4 hours later.  How do I stay connected? I'm really getting frustrated over this and am about to trade it in for a Droid. Any suggestions?

Do u have data roaming on? Do u do *228 option 2 every other month or so. Did u reset network settings? Did u do a software update?
