calling US from Canada

I am traveling for a few days to Canada. What are the rules and/or costs in calling the US?  What are the restrictions?  I don't want to sign up for a new plan, since this will only be an infrequent trip.

When I travel to Montreal I don't ever buy the plan. I just use the phone as I do in the states.
