Why won't my device recognize my SIM card?

I just landed in the Bahamas for vacation and my iphone is giving me a "Activation Req'd" message, then "SIM not valid". Wouldn't pay as you go just work?

Under settings, go to moile network, then to network, click global.... Remember #611 should always connect u to Verizon
