About once/day I get a SIM FAILURE message and lose service and can't get it back until I shut down and restart.

I know how much a SIM failure can annoy you on your phone. Let's get that fixed!Now, the 4S does not require a SIM card for use within the United States. You can try to just remove the card following the steps here http://support.verizonwireless.com/clc/devices/knowledge_base.html?id=49046. You only need it for international travel, so save it if you do plan on going anywhere. Please let us know if you are still having any problems.
