No volume on I phone when I call to the other party

My son just got a new iPhone but when he call

Me he can't hear me. I face timed and that worked. Anybody?

Being able to be heard on your calls is everything. Let's gather some additional information to find out what's happening. For clarification, does this happen on calls you make or on calls you receive? Does this happen with every call? Does this occur when the phone is on speakerphone?
