Edged up; only 2 phones owned, yet 3 contracts (2 contracts on the same phone?)

I have had two phones under the Edge up, paid off the second phone in full. Now I am on a 3rd contract, but still using 2nd phone I paid off. Does this make sense?

Edged up in Spring 2014 with 5S with new contract, with 2 months left on old contract (big mistake). Then in Sept. 2014 Edged up to iPhone 6 and new contract on that phone. Then in January I decided to pay of the iPhone 6, and dropped over $1000 in the month of January. Then in February, Verizon put me back on a contract, on my existing iPhone 6 that I paid off, in January 2015. No new equipment was purchased in February 2015 and I still have the same phone today, but am on a 3rd contract (2 contracts on the same phone) and it started all over again.

Any thoughts
