Is Verizon planning on supporting the Universal RCS messaging standard in the future?

For the past few months there has been news concerning the adoption of Rich Communication Services (RCS) as a replacement to SMS messaging and Google recent partnership announcement. The new standard offers more features and capabilities closer to what current IM services offers and take better advantage of the capability of smartphones.

Since the feature needs to be supported by the platform and carrier to work, will Verizon be offering or implementing the universal standard in the future or will be left with fragmented offerings of SMS, universal RCS and exclusive RCS?

I haven't seen anything announced by VZW. I would guess that they would move to implement RCS in the future, but no way to say for sure until they announce it.
