How can I remove duplicate cloud backup contacts?

I have perhaps 500 +- contacts and the cloud backup has over 6000.  Many many duplicates .

Best bet is to remove all contacts and then re-backup.

how do you delete the cloud contacts but not the phone contacts?

Keeping my contacts up to date is key for me. I am sure you feel the same. Just to clarify, what is the make and model of your device? Is this the Verizon Cloud or the iCloud you are referring to?
