replacing a damaged 5c with a new one. Do I have to remove sim card after I backup to iTunes and put it in the new phone? Or can I backup them plug in new phone to iTunes and restore from old backed up phone?

The SIM card contains your phone number and account information. The SIM card must be installed in the new phone to activate it with iTunes.
iTunes backup will save and the restore your information to the new phone - settings, apps, music, etc.
1. Back up the old phone.
2. Swap the sim card
3. Set up the new phone and restore the backup
