Recently I switched to Verizon from another carrier and switched from an iPhone to an Android. The problem is that my iPhone still receive messages but my android, which is registered to verizon along with my number, is not. What is going on? How do I fix this?

As tbo27 mentioned, turning off iMessage would be your first step. Secondly you also want to make sure you deregister your number from receiving iMessages on the Apple messaging platforms. Here’s the link: http://apple.co/1lqTXDj.
