Can I switch sim cards without switching devices?

I'm trying to put a new sim card in my phone, but it won't recognize it, even though it is a verizon sim card

You'll probably need to do one of two or three things to get the card activated to your number - log on to your Verizon account, switch devices, and enter the number from the new SIM card, or call customer service and give them the SIM card number so they can activate it, or go to a corporate store and have them do the activation at the store.
