You should be able to disable or uninstall the visual voicemail app, go to settings, applications, application manager and find the visual voicemail app click on it and either disable or uninstall (depending on whether it was a pre-installed app).  Depending on your device and version of Android the menus vary

Thank You...I went to disable it and it warns me that because it is a built-in app. other apps may "misbehave and that . my data will be deleted.  Also when I go to uase the regular voicemail it says unable to update. ??

How do you want to access your voicemail?  Accessing voicemail via an app on your phone is visual voicemail, if you disable it you have to call *86 (*VM) to access your voicemail.

Here is a chart of the various voicemail options available, and yes you can do visual voicemail through the app or dial *86, which should be accessible regardless of having visual voicemail app enabled or disabled.
