Had to re-start by holding power and home button.  What caused this?  Any help appreciated.

Could have been a crash, could have been hot. As long as it was a one time event and doesn't keep happening no long term concerns. I have had that happen with an iPhone once. Never happened again. If it keeps happening, then you will need to figure out if it is a bad app or a hardware problem.

I haven't seen that this is a common problem with the 5c. Have you recently installed any new apps? A software glitch or physical damage are the only causes I can think of.

If the problem persists, you could back everything up to iTunes then do a factory reset. Syncing afterward takes just minutes.
