I have restarted, turned off, taken out battery (over 5 minutes) and still is black. I have the notifications bar along the top and can pull it down, but can't access phone without unlocking and the unlock screen is just black. What do I do?

This is the last idea I have, if this does not work, perhaps you have warranty, an upgrade, or insurance.
Master reset with hardware keys
Turn off the device.
Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time:
Volume Up key
Home key
Power key.
When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and theHome key.
When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
Press Power button to select.
Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘delete all user data.’
Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
Press the Power key to turn the restart the device.

What model phone and what type of screen lock? Is the screen responsive enough to enter a code or pattern by muscle memory?

Galaxy S4
I have rebooted probably 10 times. Each time it loads a little different, but recent was loading completely... but in order to access the phone I need to "unlock" it with my numerical code. So anything I click it would have the "log in" screen - but that screen is black. I have the notifications banner at the top of the screen that I can pull down and click on something, but have to unlock the phone to gain access..... which the screen is black. I was able to restart and have it show the log in screen --- but now any time it goes to sleep I am afraid that the log in screen will be black.
NEWEST ISSUE: phone now doesn't hold a battery charge. 100% this morning at 7 and by 11 am it was at 8%. I charged for one hour (generally would be back at 100%) and it was only at 30%..... which was drained WITH NO USE down to 11% within an hour. I can't find any apps running in the back ground and even uninstalled FB and Messenger. Maybe my battery is shot?
Very disappointed in the phone...... this is all ON TOP of it just not recognizing my SD Card anymore.... with 1800 photos on it.... just doesn't recognize it. Could all this be because the battery needs replaced?

Having a blank/black screen makes the phone next to impossible to use. You have already done quite a bit to get the device to respond. I regret to see that it has not worked.
Have you been able to complete the master reset that Snn5 suggested?
Is there any damage to the device?
