It will work with mobile data as well as long as the phone is on. It uses a data connection to communicate with the phone and uses the phone to send and receive messages that are then routed to a PC or tablet. So, as long as the phone is on and the tablet has a data connection of some kind, it will work. Others will suggest Verizon Messages with Integrated Messenging...but I prefer Mighty Text as it works for me reliably and I never have syncing issues with messages or contacts like I have with VM+.

Using the phone number attached to the tablet, no. But you can associate an app with the texting on your primary phone number, and link the tablet to see and respond to the messages received on the phone.
Apps like Mighty Text and Verizon Messages+ use your phone # and texting to sync with the tablet, allowing you to send and receive messages from the tablet, using your cell phone #.

What if don't have a cell phone?
I only have my ellipsis 8 and my wife has a iPhone5
I wanted to be on my unlimited texting plan too.

To be able to text from the tablet, it has to be associated with a cell phone number, that is also running the Messages+ app. The tablet is assigned a phone number ONLY for the purpose of connecting to the Verizon network, for data purposes.

So if I use my wife's phone number I can text from my tablet?
Will we be getting both numbers texts on each of the devices? Or will they be separate?

If you associate your tablet with your wife's number, when you text from the tablet, or she texts from her phone, the messages will sync to both devices. Example, if someone texts heryou will also receive the text message on the tablet. All texts will showthat they were sentfrom her number. When looking at your online account, the tablet will not show as using the text. The total text count will only show under the phones number.

OK, so that would be really annoying.
