I was promised simultaneous voice and data on my Moto X 2nd Gen "Within weeks..." when Voice over LTE was activated via update back in November 2014, when will Voice over LTE be available for the Moto X 2nd Gen?

I bought a Pure edition of the Moto X 2nd Gen in the fall of 2014. On learning it could not do simultaneous voice and data I contacted Verizon and was told it required Voice over LTE which would happen via an OTA upgrade within weeks. Now, nine months later, I still do not have simultaneous voice and data on my Moto X with Verizon. This has caused me significant loss in productivity. When can we expect to see the OTA upgrade that enables VoLTE using the Moto x 2nd Gen? I am not looking for "It is coming soon" I want a date or range of dates we can expect to see this update.

"Why are you complaining to Verizon?   It is the software from Motorola that isn't allowing VOLTE."

Absolutely false. - Advanced Calling 1.0

With the 5.1 update the Moto X 2014 has Advanced Calling capabilities. It is VZW that is the roadblock and always has been.

From the Motorola website...

Advanced Calling 1.0

The latest software update enables Verizon’s Advanced Calling 1.0 service on 4G LTE networks with XLTE.  This includes High Definition (HD) Voice to improve call quality, and video-calling between two Advanced Calling subscribers.  You can also upgrade from an active voice call to a video call when both parties have the service enabled.

Notes:

  • After receiving the update you will need to contact Verizon Wireless to ensure Advanced Calling is enabled on your account.
  • Prior to Advanced Calling (VoLTE) being enabled by Verizon, When a call is placed on your device the 4G symbol will be replaced with a 1X symbol. This is normal operation, there is no issue with your device.

To take advantage of all of the Advanced Calling features, you need to enable Voice over LTE and video calling. To enable Voice over LTE:

  1. Touch Image
  2. Touch Settings
  3. Touch More... (under Wireless & Networks)
  4. Touch Mobile networks
  5. Touch ON for Voice over LTE

To enable video calling:

  1. Touch Image
  2. Touch Phone
  3. Touch MenuImage
  4. Touch Settings
  5. Touch ON for Video calling

Having the availability to do voice and data is always a nice thing to be able to do on the phone. I am sorry to learn that we have not met the expectation to have the capabilities pushed the the phone through a software update. At this time we do not have any information as to when the software will be available. What I would recommend at this time to sign up for alerts so you will be the first to know when it's available http://vz.to/1Iw4syy

Unfortunately, Verizon will not give any sort of ETAs on updates.  One of their engineers recently posted on his G+ page a tentative "mid June" for an update to the Moto Turbo, but it has since been pulled, I'm sure on a directive from the company.  It's just the way they decided to run their business and has always been that way.

It is completely unacceptable to tolerate delays any further for the Moto X 2nd edition.  MMS messages cannot even be received without hanging up a call due to the design of this phone: it was designed specifically for VoLTE (Advanced Calling).  On March 9, the final build of the Nexus 6 software with Android 5.1 and VoLTE was released, which is almost identical to what is required for the Moto X 2014.  There is NO REASON why this cannot be brought over after 10 weeks, considering it took only 3 weeks to bring the 5.0 software over upon its release.  I think every purchaser of a Moto X 2014 should get a free upgrade to a usable phone, since every other phone in Verizon's catalog has no issue with simultaneous data & voice.  This phone was released 8 months ago-- almost half its life has passed and it has yet to be upgraded to offer proper functionality on Verizon's network.  This is totally unacceptable!

This is a terrible response. Simultaneous voice and data is not a nice thing to have it is something that is required as it was advertised for this EXACT phone on release. I do not care that you are sorry. If VZW really cared they would provide the solution or a legitimate time frame when we could expect the solution not platitudes.

I am NOT a satisfied customer. As someone who has been with Verizon for over 15 years with multiple lines and FIOS I would expect better treatment.

May I ask where you saw or heard this advertised?  I did a quick search and can only find outside reviews from September which indicate the phone will get VOLTE with Verizon.

i never trust these reviews as they often predate the release.

People say all kinds of things. The question is, did Verizon ever promise this on their website? If it was just a store rep saying this, well...

The pure fact that the phone has the capability to have this feature (which has been a standard feature on all 4G smart phones for the last 3-4 years on Verizon) and does not is retarded.  This crap needs to get fixed.  I don't pay premium prices from a supposedly premium carrier to get inferior services...

I hear ya. I used to be on AT&T  back in my BlackBerry days and I didn't realize how useful it was to have simultaneous voice + data. I'd be on a call and the person on the other end would say, "I just sent you a spreadsheet. Take a look at the numbers." I'd put him on speaker, we'd both look at the spreadsheet and discuss. Neither Sprint nor Verizon can provide v+d on CDMA. VoLTE was supposed to fix this but I don't think it's been implemented yet in any market. It's a limitation of the protocol right now, not something Verizon is simply ignoring.

Actually, Verizon has VoLTE live nationwide, and it is available on most smartphones made since early 2013.  Prior to the debut of the Moto X 2014 and Droid Turbo, all LTE smartphones on Verizon had simultaneous data & voice by using a second transmission circuit in the phone to maintain a 1x voice and LTE data connection at the same time.  This feature was called SVLTE, and was in EVERY LTE smartphone (except iPhones) until the X 2014 came out.  The X 2014 and droid turbo were designed to save power by using the new VoLTE feature RATHER than SVLTE to do the same thing with a single transmitter.  The phone was designed for this use, but the software hasn't been pushed to this phone to use the feature, but the hardware support is there, and Verizon has the feature everywhere on their network.

Only AT&T is going market by market with VoLTE.  T-Mobile also has nationwide VoLTE.
