When I press the location button in the notification bar I get the usual warning except half the letters are white blocks. This is the latest thing I have noticed since the cover screen numeric pin pad changed to white blocks... anyone have a suggestion?

I have actually heard of this happening, JohnKelly.
Thanks for reaching out to us so we can get the resolution you need.
Samsung and the software team is recommending clearing the cache/data for the Samsung keyboard via Settings > Applications > Application manager > All > Samsung keyboard.
Also, test the S5 in Safe Mode http://vz.to/1mFGTH4 to see if it does the same thing.
If that also does not work, then you need to proceed with the Software Repair Assistant http://vz.to/1iarxob.
Please keep me updated on how any or all of these steps worked for you.
