Be sure to add the plan FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH as the rep suggested... that way you'll get the entire 100 minutes, 100 outgoing texts, and 100mb data. Event though you'll be there for only a week, if you pro-rate the plan for one week the amount of data an minutes and messages will be cut to one week - 25 minutes, 25 mb, 25 texts....

Do exactly as @SuzyQ says. If you are planning to use your phone even a little bit when traveling out of the US, the risk of the extremely expensive overage fees is not worth not getting a plan. Be warned, get the plan.
When we see people come on here with $5,000 bills after traveling, it is because they wanted to save a few bucks and not get the plan and though what can a few phone calls and a few web pages cost -- well $5,000.
