Why am I being forced to pay for a Verizon Network Extender, when my neighborhood has crappy coverage and I'm already paying a ton of money each month for service?

I'm already paying a service charge each month... that should go towards giving me better data in the new home I am moving to.  The service around my area has been deemed "marginal," meanwhile 5 minutes away, the service is fine.  I think its embarressing that VZW asks LOOONG time customers to pay $175-250 for a network extender, when its NOT my phone or home that's causing the problem.

Meanwhile, I've been told by your techs that my early termination fee would be waived in this instance if I wanted to disconnect.  That would end up being more money than just giving me a damn network extender!!!!

If you know the coverage is bad in your area, and VZW is willing to let you out of your agreement...why not just leave and pick a carrier that has better coverage in your area?

The Network Extender isn't always a solution.  I had one in my previous home and it seldom worked and when it did it would randomly drop calls. And if ever you're actually connected and leave your home, it has a hard time moving the call to a cell tower which usually resulted in a dropped call.  If I were given the the option at the time I was having issues, I would have left VZW in a heart beat.  Fortunately my new home has excellent coverage.

So, if you have an out, take it.  Save yourself some heartache and misery.

Verizon didn't make you move to an area with no coverage. Take the Free termination and go or suck it up and buy the extender.

I've lived in my home for 19 years and VZW cellular service has degraded.  I too am in the dreaded "marginal coverage" zone in a Phoenix metro suburban city and have been given the same two options.  No phone service and 100+ dBm,3G-1bar for any user in my home (iPhone and Android) and my neighbors homes.  Extenders piggyback onto your personal router and are generally not 'secure'.  I am 90% home and why would I leave for a crappier provider that can't provide better than average service for the other 10%?

azdldad  I am confused by your question? If the coverage is bad change, if you can deal with it then stay? I am not sure what you are asking.

As fair as coverage changing over 19 years, that is very possible. Building are build, plans (i.e trees) are growing, even bigger truck in the area can change the coverage. Did you do anything on your house? That could mess with your coverage as well.

I have been calling tech support for several years since I drop calls, the other party can't hear me, static on the lline, etc.  The map they show consumers shows I am in a solid 4G LTE area, yet any phone I have had drops to 3G and at  time drops to 1X.  This happens with both Android and IPhones.  I sent an email to the area President for the area of Verizon.  My answer---I am in a MARGINAL area and if I don't like their service I can go to another carrier.  They will not charge me the penalty for early termination of the contract.

The end of this story is that they don't care.  They will only service the areas where they have the largest customer base.  Their advertising is not truthful.  They may service 97% of the population, but at what quality?

So let me get this right. They agree it's a marginal coverage area, are letting you out penalty free, and you're still complaining? About what?

Why is it so hard for you to just pick up and go somewhere that'll serve you better?  You've got your out...take it.   It's a business...not a marriage...just walk away!

I Have included a picture of coverage map.  White areas have poor to no coverage.  I'm sure Verizonwould like to put up towers, but they can't do so.  Not without permission.  Many towns in Connecticuts no cell zone, are historic or farm lands and they would rather not have towers, even it cell service is non existent.

So before you blame a carrier for service coverage, understand why it is what it is.
