How do I stop my Samsung S5 from continually searching for WiFi?

I have shut it down, restarted it, restarted my modem, took the battery out.  I have NO idea what to do.  It is KILLING my battery life.  Anything I haven't thought of?  I'm not sure what it means to root my phone, but have seen that on some websites.  I have no clue why it is doing this.  HELP!

Try going into your settings.  Tap wifi, then menu and tap wifi advanced.  Uncheck the always scan option if checked.  I also read about a smart switch, where it will disconnect from a weak signal instead of constantly trying to connect to it.
