There are charges for texts and calls going in and out of canada from or to the usa.
It costs .20 to send and receive text messages to and from canada. Link: https://text1.vzw.com/text/jsp/txtintl_viewall.jsp
It also costs to call to or from canada. Its costs .49 a min to talk to someone in Canada. http://b2b.vzw.com/international/Long_Distance/North_America/Canada.html
A solution to this may be a canada calling pan. http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?item=familyShare&action=viewFSPlanList&sortOption=priceSort&typeId=2&subTypeId=74&catId=930
The only problem is that you can't have a select plan with the Canada calling plan.
I would highly recommend getting the Nationwide + Canada plan. The added cost is minimal compared to the international charges that would be incurred.
The link I have posted is different from iPhonelove's. The one here is just for an individual.
You do NOT, I repeat do NOT, want to change to Nationwide + Canada Plan. It is designed for people travel to Canada frequently. If you change to that plan you were lose the unlimited messaging, unlimited nights and weekend (will only have a 1000 minutes).
For calling Canada add the International Long Distance Plan for $3.99/month. It will reduce the rates from $.49/min to $.09/min. Keep in mind it will use you airtime plus the per min rate.
I agree that you don't want the Nationwide plus Canada plan, it's not a deal unless you're travelling and you switch it back when you get back home again.
I was curious to know more about the International Long Distance Plan, none of the Verizon folks has ever mentioned that plan to me when I've checked on using my phone while travelling to and from Canada.
