Email that's been read becomes unread several times an hour

I have been desperately trying to resolve this issue as it's making me completely bonkers.  I use Optimum Online email and use my Samsung Galaxy S5 to use it.  At least two times an hour I'm continually telling it emails I've had six weeks ago have already been "read".  Sometimes it's recent emails and others it's emails from weeks ago.  There's is no rhyme or reason.  I've searched on line to no avail what to do.  I've heard it's an Android Kit-Kat issue but that doesn't help me.  Is there something I can do so it "just works"?  I can't be without my email and deleting them all is not an option I can consider.  Thank you in advance!

I'd say try force stopping and clearing data on the email app you are using, whichever it is. If its the stock email app, you'd go into settings>application manager>swipe left 3 times or until heading at top says "all", scroll down to email app, tap it, hit force stop, hit clear data

Is there an option within the email app that marks the emails as read on the server?  It sounds like they are not being marked as read, so the next time the app syncs, they show up as unread again.

anthonyDotNet, I can understand how this can become an issue. I want to make sure that we are able to get to the bottom of this for you ASAP. How long have you had this issue? Are you using the E-mail application that came on the device or are you using an actual 3rd party application for e-mails from the Play Store? Please keep us posted.

Original poster here.

Can't figure out what happened to my original registration.

I am using the stock email application that comes with the S5.

The Galaxy S5 is stock and not rooted.

It's been an issue since I've had it.

I have tried clearing the cache and data.

Removing and adding the account using Settings, Accounts, and Pop3 email.

Reformatting the phone.

I do appreciate the responses.

Thank you!

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Ok, I think I have figured it out.

What might help before you do any steps is to make sure you also have the latest GMail updates (visit the Play Store to check).

First I deleted my email accounts (the ones used in the normal Android email application).

Then I went back into "Settings", then "Accounts".

Click "Add account".

Do NOT pick "Email"!

Scroll down to the end and you'll find "Personal (POP3)".

Click on "Personal (POP3)".

Follow the screens to include your provider's settings.

Now rather than use the normal email application, you can use the GMail application.

This is by far more convenient so my emails aren't separated between two different applications.

Another day or so will fully tell it worked, but so far I've gone a few hours without marking any emails as read.
