False Advertising Complaint

I’m sending a complaint to the Attorney General as well as the FCC over blatant false advertising by Verizon Wireless.  As a loyal Verizon customer for 13 years, my plan is “grandfathered” with both unlimited calling and unlimited data.

Recently, I received a U.S. Postal and an email offer to upgrade my phone by renewing my existing contract for 2 years.  Other than requiring me to renew my existing contract, the advertisements state absolutely nothing about needing to change to a different plan (either phone or data).

Unfortunately, Verizon is refusing to honor their advertised offers saying that I need to change my contract and not let me keep my unlimited data plan.  It’s not legal for Verizon to advertise a promotion and then refuse to sell it to me.

This is clearly false advertising, plain and simple.  Anyone have a suggestion on who at Verizon should be aware of this?

The unlimited data is not part of your contract. It is part of your plan. Verizon doesn't lock your plan into a contract, that's why you can change it anytime without penalty. So it is not false advertising. Your data plan is simply not part of your contract. Check your customer agreement. You sign a contract to maintain service for 24 months in exchange for a subsidized phone.

You are not "renewing" your contract, but signing a new contract.  And, as correctly states, the data is a feature you can add on, the contract is merely to maintain the line of service for 2 years.  You can change your minutes, your data, your texting options, and Verizon can also change the options available to you.

Face it, unlimited data is gone, and you will pay for your usage from now on.  I, and my 4 kids, and most folks I l know, are fine on 2 GB data.  If you use more than  that, from this point on, you'll pay a bit more.

I too have just filed a false advertising complaint with the FCC.  Verizon is advertising a 15% discount to veterans, which is a bait and switch trap.  They get you to sign up by saying you will receive 15% off as a veteran.  But, when you get the bill and there is no discount, that is when you are told that you have to spend $40.00 on a data plan to receive the 15% off and some plans are not eligible at all.  The salesperson knowingly lets you make multiple trips to the store to provide documentation of your veteran status when you will never receive a discount.  Shame on Verizon for taking advantage of American veterans while promoting themselves as giving a discount to veterans.  Whomever is in charge of Verizon should be punished harshly for preying on Veterans who often are living on a fixed income.  When my two year contract is up I will leave Verizon after being a customer for 15 years - I encourage other veterans to do the same.

Hello kyle57. We definitely are here to help review all the information concerning discounts. It is correct that certain plans are not eligible for corporate/military discounts. I can definitely say that the store rep did not mean for this to happen. We definitely should have taken the time to review all this information, to confirm if your existing plan is compatible with corporate/military discounts. For that I apologize. Kyle57, we can help review all these details, and help see what plans are available to help you utilize your discount. (But keep your service needs, and price in check)

I have sent you a Follow request. Just accept it, and Follow me back. This way you are able to send me a Direct Message (DM)

For immediate service, I recommend reaching out to our customer service support line at: 1-800-922-0204, if you prefer.

Thank you, kyle57. We look forward to working with you.

Guess this bad link you sent me is more proof that your customer service does not really care about helping anyone. I have already called that 800 # and they failed to offer any help whatsoever - the girl was worthless and would not even reimburse me 15.00 for my gas and time running back to the store to prove veteran status.

What exactly can you do to help with this issue?  I called the 800 customer service number and the girl that I spoke with did not seem to think there was anything she could do to help.  Not even to reimburse me for my gas and tolls to get back to the wireless store to prove veteran status - the least Verizon could do after basically lying to veterans - convincing them to take a new plan with the false pretense of getting a 15% discount for being a veteran.  Even switching the name on the phone to the veterans - all the while knowing the plan they were taking was not going to qualify for the 15% off.  Shame on Verizon.

kyle57,

I understand your concern, and I definitely regret to learn you feel you were lied to. That's certainly not our intention, we make it a point to ensure all the information you need has been provided. The discounts we offer in appreciation of our veterans is only off the cost of the plan, as advertised http://vz.to/PB4g8L . I apologize for the confusion in this case. Please let us know if you have any other concerns we may assist you with.

Yes, but the plan as to be at least $40.00 for anyone to qualify for the veterans discount. This information is not published at the store on the display and it was not provided to us by the sales representative in the store. What happened to all the help you were going to give us regarding working around our limited income. Just like I thought all talk - no action - and yes I do feel lied to. We we were never told that there was a limit on what the discount covered. Thanks for nothing - just like the phone rep. worthless.
