Define "overheating" for us? I have yet to see a battery that doesn't warm up at least a little when charging, or electronics that don't heat up a little under heavy use.
Disable all the samsung bloat in settings (S Stay, Airview, and all that other garbage)
It's the cause of both the UI lag and the overheating on the phone.
Disabled it on mine and the device runs like a champ now.
like within using the phone for 5 minutes (both browsing on website and just using other features)
the camera area heats up... pretty hot...
but i disabled all the bloat craps and lets see what happens...
We need to get to the bottom of this situation, Bseo. Then you can get back to the business of enjoying your new phone. The community provided you with some great tips and certainly asked the right questions. Are you still having problems with the device overheating? If so, I would suggest returning your device. If this is done within the first 14 days of your purchase we will replace it with a brand new phone. Have a great day.

To me any noticeable temperature rise due to the normal activity is a warning to be concerned, and feeling uncomfortable of touching or holding the handset close to the ear is overheating.
I was about to purchase Samsung GS4, however I felt a noticeable temperature rise playing with the device on a VZW store. After a couple of minutes of playing a video from youtube it started to warming up in back of the phone below the camera.
I borrowed my friend's phone(a white Galaxy S4) during a conversation on Viber through WiFi since he mentioned it heats up badly in such condition. This one really overheated doing so.
I don't care about heating up because of charging.
I do wish the octa core cpu were offered to us as that switched the cores and runs smoother. A key feature for southern guys!
For sure any news regarding fixing this issue will encourage potential buyers like me to purchase this device!
My phone overheats as well, after normal usage (less than 5 minutes of web browsing). I've turned off ALL extra programs and services, dimmed my display to the lowest possible setting, removed auto-adjustment of images, wallpaper is just a black image, and leaving just Wifi connected. It gets noticeably hot near the camera, and after another 5-10 minutes, is TOO uncomfortable to even hold. To be clear, the area that gets hot is nowhere near the battery. I had a T-Mobile Galaxy S4 that I returned as well, with the exact same issue.
I have the same problem. It overheats to almost 100 degrees and it launches from the touch of my ear when I am on a phone call. This is an incredibly sloppy phone.
It is not normal for a phone to heat up to a point where it is uncomfortable to hold it to your ear. Turning off all the phones functions as some have recommended is rediculus, why even buy the phone. These features are some of its better attibutes. Your phone definately has a problem and it should get fixed. If this problem percisted since day one then it should have been returned for a replacement. I've had my S4 for 6 weeks now and with heavy use, movies, music, web surfacing, games, there is not one hint of being overheated. This is by far the best smart phone I've ever used.
Let's get to the bottom of this formerappleuser! Is your battery swollen or too hot to touch? When this occurs is the device searching for signal, have applications running in the background, running heavy data sessions or being used as Hot Spot or connected to wall charger? Please share more details so I may further assist. Thank you.
