Consumer Reports Ratings of Smart Phones by Carrier

It appears that ALL Smart Phones have a failing in voice quality.  The December 2012 issue of Consumer Reports (Pages 48-49) did some ratings on Smart Phones.  Both Apple and Android phones (39 phones in total) from Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T were included.

As you may know Consumer Reports rates their Test Results using five categories as follows:  Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor.

I was VERY surprised that no phone (Not Even ONE) received an Excellent or Very Good rating for VOICE QUALITY.  That's 39 Smart Phones that, at the best, only have a rating of GOOD for Voice Quality and some only have a Fair rating.  It's no wonder that half the time when I put my Smart Phone on SPEAKER the person at the other end of the call says that all of a sudden they cannot hear me very well so I have to turn the speaker off.

I don't get it because this is supposed to be, first and foremost, a phone and ALL the phone manufacturers seem to have forgotten to engineer EXCELLENT Voice Quality into their their Smart Phones.

That is very interesting. I will have to say that I prefer the call quality on my Tbolt to the Galaxy Nexus. I don't recall what the call quality was on my old Motorola W385 flip phone was, but I don't think I had major issues with it.

Considering phones still use the same 1X frequency and still use the same sub 24 kbps bitrate why would you expect better vice equality? Once VoLTE is offered you'll see the quality ratings go up.

Maybe the speaker worked better. Or the noise cancellation did a better job. Heck it could even be how I held the phone to my ear.
