Fixing email on DROID RAZR with ICS

I posted this as a reply in another thread about problems with email after ICS update. This worked for me, hopefully it will work for you if you are having the same problem.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was having problems with my email app on DROID RAZR after ICS OS update. Here is what I did to fix it.

Disable the gmail app to get the regular email app to work. Go in to apps, gmail app, force stop, uninstall updates, disable app. Then go back to the regular email app and set up your accounts. Something about the gmail app is overwriting or taking over the regular email app.

I just did this and was able to set up sync and 5 minute checks for both my comcast and hotmail accounts. Seems like it's working OK so far.

Also, I set up my hotmail account by selecting manual, not by selecting the windows live hotmail option.

Hope this helps. I was pretty frustrated (ok pissed) that I couldn't get email on my "smart" phone.

I'll post this in it's own thread, hopefully to help others too.

1tenner,

Thanks for the update. Quick question for you... I have email issues since the update. Under the email app i can't see any of my accounts. If i try to add them they say already exist. If this the original problem u saw?. Curious before i disable the gmail app.

Thanks,

JT

Yes, I had the same problem with my hotmail account. It said it already existed and prompted me to delete the duplicate. When I deleted the duplicate it removed it from the email app, not the gmail app.

My comcast wasn't a duplicate but it wasn't jiving. It would send, but not receive. After disabling the gmail app it seems to work fine just from a quick test (emails sent and received both from phone and from cpu).

Please post here if this fix works for you so so it will help others too.

Okay i can't even see the original or duplicate to delete. If i go to manage app to Email Accounts app the button to clear data is grayed out. I will try this tomorrow and reply to this feed on how i made out.

Thanks again!

You need to make sure you stop the gmail app first. Go to all apps, then go to settings. Select gmail app then force stop. Then uninstall updates, then disable app. You have to do this first as it has a hook into you email account/settings. Once the app is stopped you can go back to the regular email app and add your email accounts back (and sync if necessary - you may want to do that over wi-fi to save on data).

Hi 1tenner.

I tried this and it didn't fix my issue. Eveytime i try to re-add the email accounts i don't see since the upgrade i get the message "You have already added this email account". Yet i can't see them in the list. (Yahoo and Hotmail) The weird part when i go into manage apps is i have to email related aps. Ones is called "Email' and the other is called "Email Accounts"  I have a feeling the one called Email Acounts is somehow corrupted. Out of all the buttons the only two that are available for me to use is Force Stop and Clear Cache. All other are grayed out. Hase me aggraviated, really don't want to do a factory reset!

Thanks for trying to help!

The biggest thing a bunch of us saw was that the ICS update might changed our email settings in the standard email app. We had to go back in, delete the account, and recreate it using the manual method, and putting in the settings that your provider wants, not what the phone things it should be. This happened to me with my GoDaddy and my RoadRunner email accounts.

There should be info on AOL or somewhere on how to setup an email program on a device. You could try this, I found this in a simple google search.

generic POP or IMAP AOL mail settings below.

Access an AOL Email Account with any IMAP Email Program

To access an AOL email account using IMAP:

  • Make sure you email client supports IMAP.
  • Create a new account with the following configuration options:
    • IMAP server: imap.aol.com.
    • IMAP login: your AOL screenname.
    • IMAP password: your AOL screenname password.
    • IMAP port: 993.
    • IMAP SSL required: yes.
  • Set up outgoing mail through AOL servers, too.

Access an AOL Email Account with any POP Email Program

To access an AOL email account using POP:

  • Create a new account with the following configuration options:
    • POP server: pop.aol.com.
    • POP login: your AOL screenname.
    • POP password: your AOL screenname password.
    • POP port: 995.
    • SSL required: yes
