When making phone calls sometimes you are prompted to enter an extension or use the dial pad for whatever reason. I would like to make a change so that the screen doesn't go black immediately during the call. I try to enter and extension and the screen goes black after only getting one number in and I am by no means a slow dialer/typist. I then have to keep pressing the button on the side of the phone to get the screen/dial pad back. This is also annoying when I go to hang up a phone call because the option to end the call is not readily available. Any way to make this change?

I just want to support your request. I've had exactly the same experience. I don't think there's any way to fix this, and I too find it annoying. I guess it's supposed to save battery, but it ought to be configurable.
OTOH, maybe it could be worse. This post: https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/696685 suggests that on some phones, the screen comes on in the middle of a call and one can accidentally press the end-call button. I suppose having the screen turn off saves us from that; but it also causes too many other problems, IMO.

The screen goes blank when the phone is held vertically or against your face during a call so you won't accidentally hit a key during a phone conversation. Are you holding the phone flat(horizontally) when you dial? Is it possible you have the screen timeout set too short? Just some thoughts.

The screen timeout setting doesn't seem to affect this. I've got my screen set to a 2-minute timeout, but it goes black during phone calls much sooner.
I didn't know that this was a vertical vs. horizontal deal. Is that in the manual anywhere? And who holds a phone horizontal to talk? But it would be worth a try, using speakerphone. Thanks for the tip.

I hold the phone vertically and the timeout does not change this. Its a good feature in a way so that you don't hit the wrong key, but then it doesn't help when I have to use the dial pad or end a call because I have to keep pressing the side button multiple times. Even when I hit the side button the screen appears and then quickly goes away before I can hit a key. I guess it is something I have to live with. Even though I got a "manual" with the phone it doesn't really explain much at all.

The manual that comes with the phone is pretty minimal. There's a much fuller one at http://cache.vzw.com/multimedia/mim/stratosphere/stratosphere.pdf. But even it doesn't talk about this issue.

It's on page 17 of the full user guide, which you can download. When I'm on a call, the screen goes dark when the phone is against my face. As soon as I move it away from my face the screen comes back.

Where did you download it? Is it this one? http://cache.vzw.com/multimedia/mim/stratosphere/stratosphere.pdf
This is a feature you can enable? Sorry, this computer has an adobe issue, which prevents me from viewing PDFs online and I will have to wait until I am on my home computer to view page 17.

Thanks, jrh4054. That at least makes the presence of the sensor known, but not the whole horizontal/vertical deal. Anyway, I appreciate your information so that I know about it now.
Princesa, the material on p. 17 is a description of the Proximity and Light Sensors (located between the earpiece and the front-facing camera. It just says: "Detects the presence of nearby objects to control screen display, such when you hold the phone to your ear during a phone call. Detects ambient light to determine screen brightness when the Automatic brightness setting is enabled, and when taking pictures with the Front camera."

Apparently there may be more to it than holding the phone vertical or against your face. I called a business that I knew was closed so I could hear their hours. I laid the phone flat on a table and put it on speaker; I was a good foot away from it. It went black in 30 seconds (my screen timeout is set to 2 minutes). I could still hear the message, of course. When I wanted to end the call, I pushed the side power/lock button, the screen came on for about 3 seconds, but before I could hit End Call it went black again. I had to push the side button again, and then the screen stayed on long enough to end the call.
So, I hoped that this was going to work, but it does not seem to be the solution.
