I have all of my contacts in my iPhone.
When someone texts me or I text them, the Message shows from their phone number.
I've tried updated the programming and that didn't solve it for me.
Anyone know how to fix this issue?
I've read on the apple forums this is a Verizon issue.
Are the people you are getting these texts from also iPhone users? If so, and they also are using iOS 5 then their messages might be coming to you as iMessages. If they have their iMessage "receive at" is set to their phone number then it would be in their settings as 1+the number. Not sure if that would affect how they show up on your phone though. Not sure if this is a Verizon issue...I haven't had this problem nor has the other iPhone on my account. Have you tried contacting VZW or Apple to see if this is a known issue or if they have a fix?
Tap settings --> tap messages --> tap received at -- tap caller ID. you can change that to email a registered email address. By default it set to number. As long as it shows blue bubbles you do not get charged text.
To tell the difference between an iMessage by simple glance.
Green text bubble = text
blue text bubble = iMessage
I am having the same problem with text messages showing the phone number and not the contact name. I have done that programming thing as well and it did not fix the messaging problem, only fixed phone calls that were just showing phone number and now they will show contact name. Does anyone know of a solution?
- I went to the verizon store for assistance and they told me to add a "1" in front of the contact number. I did do this, and it STILL is showing the number when I receive a text from that contact.
- The other thing I noticed is that when you text a contact by name from your contacts, the text will be stored under their name. HOWEVER when they reply, the text shows up by number without any SMS history. Its confusing and very strange and does not keep context.
- When you go to the iphone 4s search and look for the number that shows up in SMS, it does not find the number in the contacts list -- search does not search the actual number field which is very frustrating
I added the 1 and still have the same problems you outlined here as well. I'm thinking this is a patch that's needed and not a phone setting.
I am having this problem too, and it seems to have been triggered when I fixed a different problem. Having just switched from ATT, I found that for many contacts my new Verizon iPhone 4s would not let me make calls from the contacts app - I had to type in the numbers manually (else I would get a message I didn't have international and long distance dialing). I fixed that by calling *228 and 2. But now having done that, a bunch of my SMS messages have actually switched over to showing phone numbers rather than names.
OMG, the EXACT thing happened to me! I just switched from AT&T to Verizon last week. Got the new iPhone 4S after using my iPhone 3GS for years. I send a text from contacts by name. It registers as a name. The next day, it will show only as a phone number. I couldn't make a call without getting the same "you don't have long distance or international dialing" message that you got. I called Verizon, they were stymied. Called Apple, they told me to re-add the contact I'm trying to call, which worked. I don't get that message any longer, but I still get all of my text messages switching from names to numbers randomly. One started out as a name....the next day it was a number...and the day after that, it went back to the name again. This is frustrating as hell!!
Ok. I was having the same problem and this is what I did to temporarily fix the issue. I did the *228 gig and then shut down my phone and turn it back on. I have the iPhone 4S. When I turned back on the phone, I had my husband txt me (he has a droid phone) and he showed up as his name rather than his number. As for iPhone user contacts, it was still showing their number. I txt an iphone contact user and I had the option to add their phone number to my contact list, I added the number (that I already had) but this time the phone put the number in the "iphone" part of the contact (where you can add mobile, work, fax, etc). That fixed my iphone contact users who have an iphone. I hope this helps.
I was having the same problem after I reset my phone settings, too (trying to right the battery issues). After the reset, only some contacts were "linked" to text messages that were already in my inbox, and others showed up as numbers. I also wasn't able to receive any texts. I could send just fine. When I dialed a number, and it started ringing, I got all the messages that were sent to my phone when it was in its weird state... almost like calling re-connects the phone to the network.
I did the following things, and somewhere in the process, the text message displaying only the number issue seemed to right itself. I know this is tedious and not very scientific, but I'm not sure what step did the trick.
Hope it helps...
I would like to assist those of you who are still experiencing opportunities with only the number populating for a text message. From your device navigate to Settings>Phone>International Assist and if it is on please turn it off. Once you make sure that feature is off return to the home screen and double tap the home button to clear the application manager then power cycle the device. Once the device is back up dial *228 send and choose option 1. When that is complete the device should populate the contact name. You can also find assistance here Please let me know if this helps you. Thank you.

I followed your instructions, also checked out support page and followed those directions (other than adding +1 to every contact). Still no joy.
My issue is that the phone contacts show the contact name correctly, but the messages do not. This is the opposite problem from what I had originally, which was phone contacts only showing numbers, messages were working. When I did the *228, 1 fix then the issue switched to how it is now.
Do you have more suggestions or should I call support?
I found one solution. My 4s started doing this last week on a trip to NYC. I had added contacts from a map lookup that include the "+ 1" plus area code and number. None of my other contacts had included the "+1". It seems as soon as I did that, it made all the rest of the contact numbers not usable. I removed all the new "+1" telephone numbers and turned off all apps and did the *228 option 1 reboot like above and everything went back to normal. Good luck folks...
I had the same issue after i upgraded another one of my lines to an iPhone, i have one myself. Its not on the person that actually has the issue, its the person sending the message and its with the iMessage feature. Go to Settings\Messages check on the iMessage activation. I actually just turned it off on my ened and it fixed the issue. When i would "text" the other line it would come up one of two ways either 1+and their number or my email. I did try to activate it again and it states it was activated but it didn't fix the problem so i just turned it off. I hope that helps anyone who is having the same issue.
Thank you for all of your posts and suggestions! If you are still experiencing issues after performing the previously advised steps, I would recommend a reset on the device. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2110#
