I have a Samsung convoy that when I purchased was told I could down load pictures with the supplied USB charge cable. When I hook the phone up to my computer it recognize the phone .Then software missing, drivers missing..

It`s a pain to pull my micro SD card out and then put it in the reader. Where is the software or drivers needed to be able to use the supplied USB cable to transfer my pictures?

Hi

I always download mine from http://www.vzam.net/download/download.aspx

When you visit that link, your model will be referred to by its numeric model # u640 instead of its name Convoy.

After installing the driver, if you've never used a phone usb cable before to transfer data then here are instructions:

HI,

I followed MojaveMoon's instructions and still am not finding a way to download pictures from my Samsung Convoy to my PC via the USB cable.

The first reference to vzam.net did allow me to download VZAccess Manager which allows me to connect to the internet via my home network, but it doesn't seem to have anything to do with downloading pictures to my PC. :smileysad:

The second reference to samsung.com brought up instructions on how to transfer the pictures on the phone to a micro SD card inserted into the phone, which can then be transferred to the PC IF I have a micro SD card reader on/for the PC.

That doesn't seem to answer the initial question of how to use the USB connection to download pictures from the camera to the PC via the USB cable and NOT have to use the micro SD card. :smileysad:

(a) After re-reading the first post, I disagree and agree with you. My interpretation was that he had reached a dead end on trying to use USB Mass Storage mode with his USB cable and memory card. But I see now how he might instead be saying "help me find a way to make 'USB Mass Storage' mode work without a memory card".

(b1) The blue font is where you're correct, but the orange font is where you made an incorrect conclusion. After you put the memory card into the phone and after you select "USB Mass Storage" on the phone, the PC will then treat the phone+memory card as if it's a USB device by assigning it a drive letter. On the PC you can then navigate to that drive letter and browse the folders on that memory card that is sitting inside the phone -- in other words, while in USB Mass Storage mode, the PC will regard the phone (with the memory card inserted inside the phone) as if it's just a flash drive.

After you're finished either browsing the folders on that memory card or moving files between the memory card and the PC, you're not ready yet to unplug the USB cable from the PC. If you glance at the phone, the phone's screen has a message saying that it's in USB Mass Storage. You need to choose the "Disconnect" option on the phone (or press once the button for disconnecting a phone call). Now it's safe to unplug the USB cable from the PC.

(b2) I don't think I've heard so far of a way to use the phone's USB Mass Storage mode without a memory card.

Verizon offers a method of file transfer that appears to use just a USB cable without a memory card called "V CAST Media Manager Desktop Application". But at the "fnd_mediaManager" link (below) when I click "View Compatible Phones" and then "Desktop App Compatible", I see a limited number of non-smartphones. I don't know if that's supposed to be a definitive list of non-smartphones compatible with "V CAST Media Manager Desktop Application"

The file downloaded from that vzam.net link in my first post is set up to install two things: a driver and VZAccess Manager.

After you click on the file downloaded from vzam.net, the file will install first the phone driver. A message will appear on the screen such as

"Installing LG USB Modem Driver, this may take a moments ..."

or

"Installing Samsung Mobile USB Driver, this may take a few moments ..."

When the file is finished installing the driver and is ready to install VZAccess Manager, this message appears on the screen: "Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard for VZAccess Manager". And that message has two options -- "Next" and "Cancel". Because the file from vzam.net already finished installing the phone driver, we can click "Cancel" to cancel installation of VZAccess Manager.

Thanks, folks. That pretty well cleared up my questions. I understand the mass storage process now. Of course, I don't have a micro SD card, but that is easily fixed.

I did get a bonus with the VZAccess Manager - I live in the mountains and my cell phone has no reception with the tower in town - I have to drive about a mile into town before I get a signal. Consequently, we have a land phone and DSL for internet. The VZAccess Manager allows me to connect the cell phone to my home network and voila, I have reception at home. :smileyhappy:

Downside, after I downloaded and installed the VZAccess Manager, I got a pop up on my computer that said their was a Samsung updating program available which I then downloaded and installed. Once done, it said there was an update available which I proceeded to install. All looked fine. The phone switched into USB Download Mode. The computer screen and phone reflected the installation. Computer screen showed complete and lit the Close button which I clicked on. But the phone stayed in USB Download Mode, all the keys are locked and there is no way to turn it off short of removing the battery. After reinstalling the battery and turning on the phone again, it goes right back into USB Download Mode with the keys locked. :smileysad:

It's a shot in the dark, but I was wondering about something. There was this one time where I forgot to tell the vzam file to cancel installing the VZAccess Manager component. After it was installed and after something triggered it to run, I *think* I was able to uninstall it through Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs in Windows XP.

I hope a moderator will have a suggestion for your situation. And at this (link) there are some gurus there; maybe someone might have a suggestion. I apologize that back in my first post that I neglected to explain that while running the vzam file that the user can cancel installing the the VZAccess Manager component.

I found some different suggestions; I don't know if any of them will be of any help since your phone is locked up.

My boyfriend has a samsung convoy and his phone does this every time it dies, he fixes his taking the battery out, then he puts the battery back in, and BEFORE you turn the phone back on put the charger in and let it charge for a min or two. Then try turning the phone back on.

In this one thread (link), this person said that leaving his battery out for a period of time of several minutes did the trick.

Here's another suggestion:

So it just says phone off in the upper left corner and says to make calls disconnect the usb cable? If so just stop the device using "Safely Remove Hardware'

My operating system is MAC OSX 10.7.  VZAccess Manager install says it cannot install on my computer.  Guess the 'solution' is a moot point for MAC OS Lion users.
