Duplicate Text Messages

Hello,

I currently a droid x running android 2.3.3 in the Royersford, PA area.  I updated to Android 2.3.3   2-3 weeks ago.  After this update I started receiving a noticeable amount of duplicate text messages.  The duplicates can number anywhere from 2 to 11 and are received over a ten minute period.  As I am sure you can imagine this is extremely frustrating.  It is also not restricted to one contact.  I have received duplicate texts from 4 different carriers and the majority of types of phones available ranging from iphones to android to non-smartphones.

In an attempt to resolve the issue I visited my local verizon store and after spending about 20 minutes of being asked over and over if i had tried taking the battery out (which I had) I was finally told to perform a factory reset on my phone.  I did and after 2.5 hours of redownloading all my apps (apparently they haddn't backed up to google's servers yet) I started receiving duplicate messages again (it actually started before I redownloaded all my apps).  I returned to the verizon store in the next few days only to be told that since they could not get the problem to replicate itself in store (this after waiting for 45 minutes for the clerk to go around the store and use every display phone to text my phone) there was nothing they could do to help me, even though I still had duplicate messages in my inbox.

After waiting about a week I grew frustrated enough to try again and they agreed to give me a new phone (which I currently have).  I didn't receive a duplicate for about 2 days and then it started again and has gotten progressively worse ever since.  I even tried switching from the stock messaging app to handcent but it did not help (and yes I disabled the default messaging app).

Is anyone out there capable of fixing this issue?  Is it an android problem, a droid x problem, or a verizon problem?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A few more bits of information.  My mom also has the droid x running 2.3.3 and has recently started experiencing the same problem but not to the extent that I do.  My brother has a htc incredible running something other than 2.3.3 (I'm not sure what) and experiences the same problem as myself (this leads me to believe it is either an android problem or verizon but since it is on two different versions of android I am leaning towards verizon).

Thanks for any help anyone can give, and if there is already a topic about this I apologize, I could not find it anywhere on this site.

Pulling the battery and resetting the phone are very common first trouble shooting steps we take to resolve customer’s issues.  Although it may sound elementary it usually resolves many problems customers are having.  It sounds like you are having advanced issues and I would be more then happy to help you.  I will PM you and get your number so I can review your account and get your issues resolved for you.  Thank you.

Thats their answer to everything, take the battery out and reset the phone. They never have anything helpful to offer. Going into the store is even worse, I have a droid x and am also having the duplicate texts issue among others but I have given up relying on verizon to help me with any issues. Just riding out the remainder of this contract.

It sounds like (especially because you say the replacement didn't start this until a few days after receiving it) that it's an app issue. Check your apps to see which ones have access to your SMS messages (ones that aren't texting apps, obviously) and try deleting those for a while.

Also, if you're still using Handcent, go to Settings -- Applications -- Manage Applications -- select Handcent, and select Clear Cache.

Do the same for the stock messaging app if that's what you're using now.

Sounds like you hit the nail on the head with that reply, it sounds software related not hardware...

Actually, I'm convinced that it's a network thing. This has happened on 3 occasions over the nearly 2 years I've been with Verizon. Each time, I'd get duplicate messages, not all, and with no rhyme or reason. This would go on for a few days, then just stop. Annoying, but not a day-wrecker. Some of my geek buddies at the local store would experience thr

Odd. This has never happened to me... I only get duplicate messages when someone sends the same one again if I don't reply for a long time. LOL

Crap...
... As I was saying, some of my geek buddies at the store were experiencing the same thing. Calls to tech support never revealed anything of relevance. We just quit worrying about it.

The most disturbing thing I see here is the suggestions of replacing phones or doing factory restores on phones when the issue is most likely with the network. Some common sense should come into play here, but then, I don't what it's like to have a customer wanting an issue solved waiting on me for an answer.

You are right, Verwyezun, if I get duplicate messages from the boss, it's definitely NOT the network... LOL.
