You can call Verizon support and they should be able to block SMS spam for you. Unfortunately the online call & messaging block only allows 10 digit numbers to be blocked.

The most effective way is to add the number to your call block in your account settings via this website.

Log into your account with Verizon on your computer. Click on "My Services", click on "Spam Control." Type in the telephone number you want to block and click OK.
Notice, however, these blocks last for only 90 days, and after that, if you are still getting messages from this number, you have to repeat the process. Stupid, I know, should be permanent. But that's the way Verizon set it up.

If you are trying to block text messages from a ten digit number and you have the ten digits number you can add the free Call & Messaging Block to your line. With this block you can block up to 5 numbers.
Call and Message Blocking are free features that assist consumer postpaid customers in blocking unwanted calls and messages from specific numbers on a short-term basis. Customers can manage it themselves and make changes whenever necessary by accessing www.vzw.com/spamcontrols.
The number will remain blocked for 90 days. If you need to continue blocking the number after the 90 days you will need to add the number back to the block list.
If you are trying to block text messages from a short code number you can add the free Premium SMS block to your line via your My Verizon account. You can also reply to the message you are receiving with the word STOP. You will receive a confirmation text advising that you have been unsubscribed from the Premium SMS.
Thanks

PLEASE consider this a feature request -- we NEED to be able to block SMS by 5- and 6-digit codes, not just 10-digit phone numbers. Since many of us pay by the message, not being able to block individual "Premium SMS" services is probably something you legally need to provide.

Is there any equivalent feature for prepaid phones?

I believe only if you have access to the Account details (MMS & SMS messages / Blocking) on the Verizon web site for the phone number. There are Apps that can "ignore" unwanted numbers, but not "block" so that they don't go against your mins.

I have a prepaid phone, a very old plan, and I don't have any spam controls in My Verizon. In my case, I found out the 6-digit phone number I was getting text spam from were AIM text messages, and found out how to block all AIM text messages to my phone. I've written it up here:
https://community.verizonwireless.com/message/924947#924947
Hope it helps! Boy, what a nuisance! I have over a couple of dozen of these spam text msgs - what a waste of money! Plus it started at 6:30am and continued throughout the morning!!!
