Droid X (non rooted) hangs at M logo

Hey guys,

I have a Droid X that is less than a month old. It is non-rooted and (was) running Android 2.2. I tried to open up the Music player yesterday and the phone suddenly rebooted itself and now it will not get past the M logo. I've tried pulling the battery (overnight), pulling the SD card, powering on the phone while holding the power button and home key to try to get into recovery mode, also tried power + menu button.  None of this worked. The only alternate screen I've been able to get to was the boot loader (power + volume up). Even then, thats sporadic.

The battery had a full charge and still does. I tried plugging it in and repeating the steps. Have any of you come across this, or do I need to take this to a VZW store and settle for a refurb for a phone that I paid $200 for...

Thanks,

Jimmy

However no. I was referring to random software hangups for over a year now, not particular to this device though. However this particular device has a lengthy history of the problem I'm mentioning too.

That makes entirely no sense...

Nope, gave it a couple more minutes to soak in and it still doesn't.

Sure devices have issues, out of well more than 1 million sold there are bound to be flukes, even 1,000 phones having the same issue is only a 0.1% or less occurrance.   However, I'm thinking the biggest issue is SMARTphones are not for everyone.

Try clearing the Cache, if this doesnt work then you can hard reset it by second option...

Option One...

Power Device Off First.....

1. Hold Home Button and press power

2. Screen will show a Android with a triangle with astrick

3. Let Go of Home Button and Power

4. Press Search Button (Far Left Button)

5. A blue menu will show at top of page, scroll to Clear Cache

6. Select Yes to verify

7. Allow data to be cleared (Information at bottom of page will go through a few steps)

8. Once complete Blue Menu will show at top again, select Reboot

Note: Use volume up and down to select opinion and use camera button as Enter,,,

Option Two...

Power Device Off First.....

1. Hold Home Button and press power

2. Screen will show a Android with a triangle with astrick

3. Let Go of Home Button and Power

4. Press Search Button (Far Left Button)

5. A blue menu will show at top of page, scroll to Format Device

6. Select Yes to verify

7. Allow format to complete (Information at bottom of page will go through a few steps)

8. Once Format is complete Blue Menu will show at top again, select Reboot

Note: Use volume up and down to select opinion and use camera button as Enter,,,

After working pretty well for the first week, my new Droid X now hangs at the Moto logo. When I hold the Home button and press Power it does not display the Android, triangle, and asterisk. The M logo remains ... I left it for 30 minutes to be sure.

Twice before this first happened I got SD card error messages... can't recall now the specific wording.

I've seen forum posts about this problem going back more than one year. Causes suggested range from a display driver bug to temperature sensor bug. Clearing the cache is not a fix. Going back to the Verizon store tonight, will follow up to this post.

Yeah. I had to go to the verizon store and they shipped me a new one. Just activated it tonight and all is well again. Now to ship the old one back. Its a shame that they havn't really gotten a concrete diagnosis on the issue before. Ofcourse all of the reps simply state "we've *never* had this happen with an X before." My reply: "Well its happening now, and its been happening according to the Verizon wireless community forums for over a year now." Oh well, at least I'm up again until the next failure. I know of several people (look on some of these forums) that are on their 3rd droid X... Hopefully this will stay up.

Also, Wildman,

I stated in my post above that none of your suggested options worked. I could only access the bootloader, but I do appreciate your quick reply.

Compy234, hope this phone works for you. For future reference, there's no need to include the "non-rooted" disclaimer in this forum. There's another Droid X forum (anyone that reads other forums knows the one I'm talking about) that should change it's name to Droid X Rooted forum.

Not that there's anything wrong with that......

Did you make sure to power off device before doing Home and Power, this is stock recovery and this is part of progamming that can be accessed if the device wont do anything else, if you are getting bootloader page you are pluged to a pc or pressing camera, volum down button and power button.   If bootloader is accessing the recovery mode should work.

You do realise this phone has only been out for about 8 months right?

Also, putting "non rooted" in your topic makes it about a 99% chance that your problem was a failed root, or customization, which isn't a big deal to most of us just don't blame VZW for your own mistakes.

When the phone hangs at the M screen, it usually has to do with a data issue.  If you were able to enter the bootloader you should have been able to enter the hard reset function, unless of course those files were jacked after a root.  I'm sure this issue is what the VZW rep was refering to, not that fact that your phone was stuck at the M screen.

Thanks for your reply,

However no. I was referring to random software hangups for over a year now, not particular to this device though. However this particular device has a lengthy history of the problem I'm mentioning too.

While I appreciate your reply, your accusation of me rooting my phone is exactly why I placed it in the topic. This is a software/hardware issue, not my own mistake. I did not do any customization, its stock 2.2.1. Trust me, if I bricked the phone, I could just as easily fix it if I'm willing to root it to void my warranty.

The verizon rep at the store still couldn't figure it out. I'm not missing any steps here, I can enter the bootloader, but I cannot enter the utility screen.

Everyone claims that they've never seen it before, well now you have. Hopefully someone will eventually recognize it. So if myself nor a VZW representative could figure it out, maybe there actually is a problem. Yes, I powered the phone off, yes I held down home, yes I powered it back on then released the button. It cycles and the screen flashes when I keep holding the home key. So no, I cannot get into the utilities menu.

YES, I can get into the bootloader by holding down the volume up key while powering on.

YES, I have booted (or tried) without the sim-card to no avail. Same problem.

NO, I have not used any USB connections while doing this, so no, the theory of accessing the bootloader meaning that I have to be connected to USB is invalid. Try it on your unit, I've been able to do it several times without a USB connection.

Once again, I appreciate each and every reply. However do not assume that just because I said "No, the phone's not rooted" means that it actually *is*.
