If you are trying to activate a pre-paid phone on a contract plan number, it likely won't work - you need to have thepre-paid be active on a pre-paid account for 6 months before you can switch.
You'll need to call customer service and give them the ESN and see if they can possibly activate it for you on your account, or find another phone to activate - an older one that a friend has that has been on a regular contract account, ebay, etc....
