The Android 2.3.20 update has failed on my Droid 2 close to 10 times. I tried a factory reset and that did nothing of benefit. Any suggestions?

That's just one person's opinion. I have no problems with the update at all neither do many others who have installed it.
I'm not sure if I can help you with the install since some things here can't be discussed. Those things are usually the cause of not being able to install the update.

I played multiple mp4 files today while at the office. I can also play avi files.

I have given some recommendations below that may help:
1. Complete a soft reset (power off the device and remove the battery for several minutes).
2. Ensure signal strength is sufficient and you are maintaining a 3G connection. If not, try relocating the device to obtain a more stable connection.
3. If 3G is not consistent, try using Wi-Fi to download the update.
4. Close all open applications before running the update.
5. Ensure the battery is sufficiently charged.
