My droid 2 sees my laptop but won't connect to the internet, what up with that?

I set up my 3g hotspot. Fired up the laptop. The phone says "connected to my pc" the laptop sees the phone, show connected to phone but no internet. Spent yesterday on the phone with Verizon help. Spent today on the phone with Motorola help. Neither could figure out why the laptop won't open the internet. When I start the 3g hotspot and then check, my phone shows wi-fi off. If I turn wi-fi on it shuts off the 3 g hotspot. What am I doing wrong?

There is an extra charge to use this feature, if you haven't set this up with verizon, it won't work, but it sounds like you may have done that. If not, I can't understand why tech support didn't mention it. If you go to where you enable tethering (menu>settings>wireless & networks>wireless tether), there should be a help button. Click that and you should be able to get more information.
