Have you just gotten your Droid X and now you need to transfer your   contacts? Here is how:

Step 1: Export the contacts as a .*CSV using the one following Personal Information Managers.

Step 2: Import the .*CSV contacts into Gmail.

If you do not have a Gmail account, follow the instruction below:

  1. Navigate to http://mail.google.com/mail/signup.
  2. Fill out the Create an Account form and submit.

Step 3: Log into the existing Gmail account on the new Android device. The contacts will sync automatically over the air.

We hope you enjoy your new device!!

For those that choose not to use google or Gmail for your contacts I found a way to do it.

Connect your Droid using the usb cable and open the SD card.

Go to outlook and choose contacts. Select all of your contacts by clicking the first contact, scroll down, hold the shift key, and select the last contact. They should all be highlighted now.

Right click on any of the contacts, choose send as business card. Your outgoing email should pop up and all of your contacts should show up as attachments.

Highlight all of the attachments, and copy/paste them to the SD card on your Droid.

After the paste is complete go to contacts on your Droid, hit menu, settings, more. Hit import/export and select import from SD card.

You'll need to use it kind of .....

Download the Backup Assistant Application to your device.

1. Select “Get it Now” or “Media Center” from the device’s menu, then select either “Tools on the Go” or “Browse & Download”

2. Select “Get New Applications”.

3. Select “Business Tools / Information”.

4. Select “Backup Assistant” and press OK

After downloading the application follow the instructions for syncing your contacts to the Web.

1. Go to Verizon Wireless and log into My Verizon.  If you do not already have a My Verizon login and password select the“register” link.

2. On the My Verizon landing page select either “My Contacts” from the account actions on  the right side of the page, or the “Contacts” button at the top of the page..

3. Export the .csv file:
a. Select the contacts that you want to export. If you want to export the entire list use "Select All".

b. Select the "Export Contacts" function.

c. Select the option to export contacts in "CV (Outlook)" format.

4. Save the exported .csv file to your computer.

5. Go to mail.google.com and log in. You will need to register for an account if you do not already have one.

6. Select “Contacts” from the menu on the left side of the screen. Once on the contact page select “Import” in the upper right hand corner.

7. Follow system prompts to import your .csv file.

8. Activate your Android device.

9. Sign into your Gmail account on your DROID. Contacts will sync automatically over the air.

You don't need to go through all that to transfer contacts with Backup Assistant for the Droid X.

The secret is that you need to uninstall Backup assitant from your old phone before you activate it on your new phone.

I have used backup assistant for all my phones since I went to Verizon, back when we had to PAY each month for it.

I went from an env touch to Droid X. Backup assistant worked just fine, no import/export or anything like that. I just uninstalled it from the env touch before I activated the Droid X, and when I setup the Backup assistant for the X, told it to sync, and all my contacts were there.

I do not sync my contacts to my gmail account. I like to keep my contacts on my phones seperate from all other contacts I have everywhere else.

Just old fashioned I guess.

Backup assistant is indeed supposed to be the easiest solution to transfer contacts if you were already using it on your previous phone.

Unfortunately I you have already activated your Droid X it might be too late, since backup assistant needs to be FIRST used on the previous phone to backup old contacts, THEN only can you activate your droid x and sync with backup assistant.

my experience was even more complex since I had contacts on backup assistant AND on google. When I signed in on google first, all my google contacts came nicely. Then, I signed in on backup assistant and instead of adding my old phone contacts, the server mixed everything, uploaded my google contacts to verizon website and dumped my backup assistant contacts to the website trash....

I ended up deleting all contacts in backup assistant and I only keep google contacts on my phone.

However if you have contacts only on backup assistant you should be fine, as long as you do the backup BEFORE activating your new droid x.

This is really a mess and I hope android 2.2 will solve this issue (they also have to fix backup assistant at the same time).
