What is the icon that looks like a diamond with  + sign in it for...and how can i make it go away?

samsung intensity. sorry i didn't mention it. most regular (not smartphones) seem to have the same interface.

The symbol stands for:Location E911: Indicates Global Positioning Service (GPS)
for 911 is set to On for emergency calls only.

You will not be able to shut it off. If you want GPS locator on all the time here are the instructions. This will be the same icon, with arrows also.

The Location Global Positioning Service (GPS) setting identifies
your location to the network. You can fully enable this setting or
set GPS to work only in the case that you dial 911 from your
phone.
1. From the home screen, press MENU. Press the
Directional key to highlight the Settings & Tools
menu and press .
2. Press Phone Settings.
3. Press Location. The following options appear in
the display:
• Location On: GPS location setting is on wherever the feature is
available.
• E911 Only: GPS location setting is on whenever you dial 911 only.
4. Highlight an option and press .

so it means i can only place emergency calls?

No, what it means is you are not located via GPS unless you call 911.  I think all phones have either symbol. Mine shows GPS locator is on all the time.

If you go to Menu>>Settings and Tools>>Phone Info>>Icon Glossary you will see a list of all the symbols that may possibly show up on your screen, and what they mean--at least a once or two word description.  If you can't figure it out from there, google the definition and see if that helps.
