So I have a chance to update my phone on 4/10/10 my billing cycle ends a few days after which I plan on switching plans and getting put on a family plan with my boyfriend and getting the account switched to his name. I also plan on getting a chocolate touch which requires the 9.99 data plan. If I purchase the phone on 4/10 will I be prorated from that date for the data plan or will the package start when I actually activate the phone?
bascially I want to know if i can purchase the phone online at the discount price and wait until I switch my calling plan to activate the phone and start paying for the data package, or if I will be paying for the extra cost starting the day of phone purchase.

The charges will begin when you ACTIVATE the phone - however, I'd be careful on this one, because by purchasing the phone on your account you are agreeing to renew your contract for 2 more years. And the phone would have to be activated on your account before your bf can do the assumption of liability, I think.
Now I am confusing myself....you want to use your upgrade to get the new phone, but then wait and let him do the AOL on your line to transfer it to his account....THEN activate the new phone and tack on the data plan. It sounds quite doable, but maybe one of the other folks who know more about the workings of these things can tell you if this would work, or if it would have to be activated on your line BEFORE the AOL takes place. I'm not sure!

Yeh that's basically what I want to do, I just don't want to have to deal with the prorating. maybe we will keep the plan in my name for a month before we make the switch just to make sure everything gets done properly. The company he works for gives him a discount if the bill is in his name so he is switching to verizon which will allow me to also get the discount with the family plan.

I don't know how your BF's discount works but I also have a discount and the discount only applies to the primary line. My monthly access and data plan are discounted but my second line's monthly acces is still the full amount and if I had data on it that would also NOT be discounted. That being said combining accounts is usually always a cheaper option.

yea, his is probably the same way, but we'll be on a family plan, and he is not getting a data package phone.

You will not be charged for the data package until you have activated the phone. If you are currently eligible for the new every 2 discount, it will be best to go ahead and upgrade your phone before the switch. If you wait until after the switch you will no longer qualify for the new every two discount.
Regarding the data charge. If you upgrade before your upgrade date, you will be charged a partial charge of the $9.99 plus a month in advance for the $9.99. The $9.99 month in advance will be credited back to your account once your final bill has generated. Since you will need to activate the phone before the account is changed over, you can activate the new phone so that you can agree to the new 2 year contract(contract will transfer over to his account). After agreeing to the contract, you can activate your old phone and wait to activate the new phone until the AOL has been done.

If you have a NE2 credit it is best to upgrade first and then do the AOL like others have said. You'll lose the NE2 credit if you don't do it in that order. As for the prorates when you do an AOL you will be prorated...the only way that wouldn't happen if you and your boyfriend have the same bill cycle date and do the AOL on the first day of a new cycle.
If I were you this is probably what I would do. Upgrade online when you get the phone call the 800 number on the paper, accept the T&C's, say you want to activate the phone later(this will not change your phone but will start the data package), call customer service or remove that data package online that same day. Then when you do the AOL activate the phone and start the data package. If you activate it on your plan and then a few days later do the AOL you will be prorated from the date you added the package till the AOL is complete and prorated on your BF's plan from the date the AOL was complete to the bill cycle. At least this eliminates one part of the prorates.
