voice and data simultaneously

So the add is true....Verizon network does not permit data and voice simultaneously.  I bought the Droid because it was the Verizon answer to ATT iPhone.  Looks like I was wrong in this choice due to the network limitations.  Wonder why  the network does not handle?

"iPhone’s ability to handle data and voice simultaneously, something Verizon’s (VZ) CDMA network does not permit. “Say you’re on a call with a client and he asks, ‘did you see my email?’ You can say, ‘yep got it right here,’ all without ever leaving the call,” the ad explains. “Can your phone and your network do that?”

For the record, I have had a Blackberry Pearl 8130 (until my Droid arrives tomorrow!) and many times have been on calls and been able to pull up e-mails on the phone to read and discuss them. Now, I've never had a situation where I was talking to someone on the phone and they said "I'm sending you an e-mail right now...open it and read it while you're talking to me."

I can see where it might occasionally come in handy to be able to put someone on speaker phone and keep talking to them while I find and forward them an e-mail but over the last several years, it's never happened to me once. It's really quite trivial to say, "I'll forward that to you in a sec."

Usually, if I need to use my phone for e-mailing or other network data usage it's because I'm not sitting in front of a computer. If I'm driving, I probably shouldn't also be talking and e-mailing at the same time anyway. And if I'm not near a computer and not behind the wheel, it's because I'm out (at a restaurant or a movie or something) which means it's well outside typical business hours and it's trivial to say, "I'll send that to you in a few minutes. Bye." then hang up and send them the info they're after.

I guess what I'm saying is, yes, it'd be nice to be able do to both simultaneously because a situation could theoretically come up where that comes in handy. But it's a trivial issue to me.

If it's a deal breaker to somebody, then VZW may not be the network for them. I'd rather have coverage 99.9% of the places I find myself.

So here is a scenario where for me both voice and data simultaneously would have been nice.  Last Sunday on the soccer field with my daughter.  We had to drive about an hour so the bluetooth headset is still on and in my ear.  Phone rings, its my brother, he is in the car driving and wants to know the score of the Cowboy game.  I take my Driod out of the holster and have no Internet connectivity.  Now this is no way a deal breaker for me and probably way at the bottom of my list but it is "Just a nice to have"

BTW, you CAN check your email while ont he phone with someone, you just cant view emails that came in while on that same conversation.  When you get an email, it almost immediately saves it to your phone, so you dont need 3G to read your emails unless they came in while your were still on the phone.

I think most people see that comercial for it is....a desperate attempt at finding something the droid doesnt do.....well ill help them out.....it doesnt do the dishes either...or fly you to the moon...but who cares. It still blows iphone out of the water, and nothing they find out about the droid is going to change that.

If you really need to talk to someone and check your e-mail than you need to go somewhere else I guess. Yeah Verizon doesnt let you do that but you notcie how thats all AT&T and Apple can come up  with 😕 Verizon Can come up with a VERY LONG list with what is wrong with AT&T and APPLE. I think I will take better network coverage over having to check and e-mail while talking to a friend lol NOTHING is that important.

i like the map AT&T displayed that showed their 3g coverage.  lmao

when i had AT&T, i had the Lg Vu with television so i got the unlimited data package because in my job i travel sometimes for 2 or 3 hours per trip (with someone else driving of course).

so i think great, watch a little television while driving from San Antonio, texas to del rio or ulvalde or eagle pass.  but NO. once i get out of San Antonio, no signal. just voice with very little data.  bummer.

oh well at least i could watch television while in San Antonio. oh wait, thats what my full size television is for, never mind.

I think its the limitation of the network. The GSM networks allow simultaneous data and voice. It really came in handy one night when I had a flat in the parking lot. I called a friend who had the exact same model of the SUV as me, and he emailed me a scanned copy of the diagram that explained where to put the jack underneath the vehicle to change the tire, while at the same time talking to me on the phone.

It does have its uses.

I hope you weren't the one driving. If you were, please stay off the roads near me!

Perhaps the 4G service will allow simultaneous voice and data use.

I'll admit that while I had an iPhone it was handy to be able to talk and receive a new e-mail.....

WHEN THE SIGNAL WAS DECENT ENOUGH TO DO SO!!!

Ahh, that's better...
