When I travel outside the US and use my phone the first time how do I know whether travel pass kicks in or international call/text?
That would depend on which international plan for which you signed up. Normally, the default will be that no international plan is active on your account. If you do not sign up for a specific plan, you would be charged the inflated pay as you go rates.
