i have an iPhone 6, not activated. Can I get a new line and buy an iPhone 7 and use the 6 to get the promo? If so, could I then switch it to another line on my account?

Upgrading is exciting and the trade in offer is a great promotion that we want you to take advantage of if you can. As long as the iPhone would not be locked to another line or contract there should be no reason it couldn't be used as a trade in. It also needs to be in good working and cosmetic condition. And indeed once you have your new phone it can be used on another line if you wish.
