Actually the rumors are that the announcement is on 9/12 with release on 9/21.  Both Verizon and AT&T have reportedly canceled all employee vacation Sept 21-29 which kind of supports that rumor.

@Spiral, that's what I read as well. I think (never a sure thing with Apple) that you can preorder the phone. So 9/12 for the announcement and 9/21 for the phone to be available. I believe the 9//21 is for Verizon and AT&T; the other carriers may have earlier dates. It's all just conjecture now (again Apple is always so secretive about this stuff).

I need new phones like yesterday - one of ours is broken and the other is dying a slow death. I'm trying to decide if I should get the 4s now and then maybe upgrade if the new one sounds good. When it comes to electronics, I really don't like being used in the research department. Sometimes it's better to let them work out any kinks first. Good luck on whatever you decide to do!

That is NOT Likely mm811, as IOS 6.0 is still only at Beta 4, unless a new Build came out today, which is NOT likely as today is a USA National Holiday, and there will be no one at Cupertino, CA to give me Beta 5 today (I am in the Apple Developer Program), Beta 4 came out on August 6th, and IOS Beta's Only come out on Monday's Pacific Time Zone. We usually have at least 6 Beta's (With Major IOS Releases) Before Apple begins testing the Gold Master IOS Build, and we sometimes even have 7 Beta's before Gold Master (like was the case with Apple IOS 5.0). There also are still some very serious issues that need to be worked out with Apple IOS 6.0 Beta before Gold Master Release, which means that we are more than likely looking at a Late October Release for both Apple IPhone 5 and Apple IOS 6.0. Just FYI.
