Why do I keep getting a "sim failure" message on my iphone 5?

Hi, I keep getting a "sim failure" message on my iphone 5. The apple forum suggests going to airplane mode and back, but that doesn't solve the problem for me. Turning the phone off and then back on seems to work, but only for somewhere between a few minutes and a few hours. I bought the phone directly from VZW online. What should I do?

Sometimes the SIM card is just not seated properly. Removing it, then reinserting it and powering up the phone will fix it.

The SIM card itself may be defective - you can get another one free at a Verizon store.
