When you say your iPhone broke, what exactly do you mean? i.e. cracked screen, can't make calls, wi-fi doesn't connect??

What Verizon will do depends on many factors. What exactly do you mean by "broke"? If it's not working due to a manufacturer's defect, you are covered by the manufacturer's warranty, and I would recommend skipping Verizon and contacting Apple directly.
If it's not working because it was dropped, screen cracked, exposed to water, or some other physical damage, then that would be covered only if you have insurance on the phone, and it would be handled through Asurion or Applecare, whichever insurance coverage you have. If you have neither one and the iPhone is broken due to physical damage, then Verizon will not do anything... you can find a replacement via swappa, ebay, a friend, etc.
A little more information about what's broken and how it got that way would help us give you more specific directions on what to do and what to expect from Verizon.
