Go to settings>iTunes and App Store>Automatic Downloads>App Store Updates> toggle off. This uses wifi if you are on wifi. But they do update during the night. It uses excess battery power, but not cellular data, unless you don't have wifi.

We are having the same problem with my 13 yr old son's iPhone 5c.  He went from 2g to 40g with no usage changes to justify data increase.  Further, our text alerts on data usage suddenly stopped around the same time the data started increasing.

I realize this is an issue with the phone created by Apple, however, Verizon should take some responsibility and take care of their customers who are getting hit with excessive overage charges.  Verizon chooses to do business with Apple and offers/recommends Apple products to their customers.  This is obviously an iPhone 5c and 5s issue.  As such, they should do a product recall and credit these overage charges.  They should then seek restitution from apple or sue them.

We get upset with Verizon because they refuse to admit this isn't a user problem, but a product problem.  Who has time to constantly babysit their settings, which seem to reset on their own.  We try to resolve this issue, which takes hours of getting bounced around from rep to rep, department to department, sitting on hold, and getting disconnected.  This has been frustrating and remains unresolved.  Presently, my phone is suspended because I refuse to pay over $1,000 for data overage charges that are unwarranted.  This is inconvenient and creating problems.

In summary, I believe Verizon needs to deal directly with Apple and demand they take responsibility for their defective product and the effect it has had on their customers.  Customers shouldn't have to deal with Apple.  I don't believe they can help us with our main issue; our bill.  The iPhones should be recalled and replaced with a phone that is compatible with Verizon services and use by children and average users.  The average user is not tech savvy and educated on how data is accumulated.  Last, charges while on WiFi are unexpected and unjust.  Thank you for your consideration.

The data your son uses is not Verizon fault. Check his settings. Reset the data so you can see what his phone uses. It's probably videos. YouTube is a biggie. So are intense games. How do you know what all he does on that 5c?

Did you look to see what apps were using data?  Don't believe for a second a 13 year old can't chew through 40 GB. You make a conclusion with no real proof.

Ledsteplin:  As stated in my previous post, "I realize this is an issue with the phone created by Apple".  I have had several different smart phones and have never had to worry about babysitting my settings to avoid data charges.  There is too much evidence out their from customers, not only from Verizon, that there is an issue with the Iphones 5.  This is an ongoing issue.  You make a valid point about me not knowing everything he does on the 5c; however, there is too much evidence that there is a serious issue that Verizon and Apple choose to avoid.  We shouldn't have to receive an enormous bill before learning about the issue.

Weth:  As stated in my post, my summary is based on my belief.  The evidence from customers dealing with the same issue speaks for itself.  We were blindsided.

**What is Verizon doing to take care of their customers who have been blindsided.  We will be changing my son's phone to a Droid.  My issue lies with my bill.

With all due respect, I would appreciate a response from Verizon.  I do not plan on replying to every post.

With all due respect, you need more than belief.  Most with complaints are real use.  A small minority may have real issue.  At the minimum look to see what is using the data.

My husband has looked at the data usage and concluded that there is no way this data overage is possible.  Why are you avoiding the fact that this is an issue with numerous customers?  Why are you avoiding the fact that the average user is not tech savvy and shouldn't have to babysit settings?  Every phone I have had has been designed to be user friendly.

Does Verizon pay you to try discredit, downplay and skirt customers' issues and concerns, or do you just find joy in trying to point blame and make people feel like idiots.  What are your credentials and what makes you an expert on this issue.  If you can't admit there is an legitimate issue here, you haven't done your research.  A small minority are actually dealing with this issue and standing up for what is right and the large majority are just upgrading their data, limiting their usage and enjoyment, and/or paying excessive charges for using their phone.

You would get better help with this issue on an iPhone forum. My Wife uses a 5c. No problems with data at all. I have none on my 5. My 27 yr old son does. Mostly videos. Go to iMore.com or everythingicafe.com. for help. It's a user issue.

Please show the daily husband found that concludes the data is not real.    Not believing a 13-year-old can use 40 GB is not really a reason.   Not being tech savvy has nothing really to do with the issue because that's not an excuse if you use The data.  I've had real life experience with people complaining of inappropriate dailies and had me take a look. In every case there was an exclamation. This included the person using video when they didn't realize video is being used in the background, thought they were connected to wi-Fi or didn't realize they were disconnected.

I have no connection with Verizon other than being a customer like you .   I've dealt with these types of issues both here and in person more than you can imagine.

History will keep repeating itself with your son unless you investigate and understand where the data used came from and what you need to do To prevent it.

There are some true legitimate issues out there that are unexplainable. The vast majority are explainable and you haven't given enough information to lead us one where the other. Just because someone has an issue doesn't mean that everyone has an issue

Switch phones with him and see if the problem follows whatever phone he uses.  If it does, you know the issue is his usage.  If YOU now have a big data problem, then you know it's, FOR SURE, the phone.
