In anticipation of a trip to Germany and Italy late this month, I
visited the VZW website and added a Global Data & Voice package to my new
iPhone 5s. Is there anything else I need to do? Do I need to have the SIM
card activated, as this is a new phone I've not yet traveled overseas with? And what is the three digit number to dial to update the
phone's provisioning?
Thanks for your help.

Sounds like a fantastic trip, saxonman! Let's make sure you are able to stay connected. The device is pre-installed with the SIM card and 4G devices do not need to be updated with *228. You will want to make sure the device is set to Global Mode. Go to Settings>Cellular, turn on Voice and Data Roaming. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns. Have an awesome journey!
Thank you,

One other question (or worry, I guess): the website pages about global ready phones like the 5s say that the SIM card must be activated for the phone to work in non-CDMA networked countries (like Italy and Germany, which use GSM). Was the SIM card automatically activated when I first activated the iPhone? Or do you guys have to do some magic to activate it for use in GSM countries?

Hi saxonman,
Let's get this figured out! Are you looking to use VZW global services or obtain a sim card from a local international carrier?

I want to be able to use the phone overseas. I've added a Global Voice and
Data Plan to my account, and the new iPhone 5s comes with a SIM card
pre-installed. My question was whether I need to activate the SIM card
before I travel overseas with the phone?
Thanks!
