I have a Droid Bionic and when I am in a 4g area I can talk and surf.  I never thought it was a big deal till I had it and I actually do use it.  I was ready to switch to Apple but this has made me rethink it.  No one at Verizon could answer my question.  They just said the iPhone 5 would do what my Bionic would do.  So I don't know what the real truth is.

The only phone on 4g for Verizon that did the chat surf could have been the thunderbolt. It had two antenna, iPhone never told you could chat and surf on Verizon. And it never said it could do what s3 can do. Each LTE phone is different. They can't say LTE if it isent.

I'm not full verse in android. Who says you only can do only 5 hit spitting at once on 4g. Some android 4g does only 5 too.

On Verizons or Sprints 4G LTE you cannot chat and surf at the same time with the IPHONE only AT&T's net work has that ability.  However when your phone is connected using WIFI instead of 4G then you will be able to surf and chat at the same time.

Here is what i read and why its this way, this is specific to the IPHONE:

Earlier today we told you that the Verizon iPhone 5 was the best choice to buy, but this news may change your mind. The Verizon and Sprint (CDMA) iPhone 5 will not be able to talk and surf the web at the same time, while the AT&T (GSM) iPhone 5 will. It’s been that way since the iPhone 4 debuted on Verizon back in 2010, but nothing has been officially said about the iPhone 5’s ability to talk and surf until now.

Verizon has confirmed that you won’t be able to use 3G or 4G LTE data while talking on the iPhone 5. Due to the fact that Verizon and Sprint both run on the CDMA network standard, this limitation assumedly extends to the iPhone 5 on Sprint as well.

The Verge got a statement from Verizon:

The iPhone 5 was designed to allow customers to place a voice call on the Verizon Wireless network, while letting customers access the Internet over the WiFi.

The Verizon iPhone 5 will allow for simultaneous data and voice when connected to a WiFi network, but not on Verizon’s 3G or LTE bands.

According to AT&T:

AT&T customers can talk and surf simultaneously on the new iPhone 5.

The iPhone 5 won’t be able to use LTE data speeds alongside voice, but at least customers will be able to use AT&T’s current HSPA+ network.

Certain LTE Android smartphones on Verizon can do simultaneous talk and surf, so this looks to be the result of the baseband hardware Apple chose to put in the iPhone 5.

Update: The New York Times spoke to Apple about why the iPhone 5 can’t do simultaneous talk and surf on CDMA:

An Apple spokeswoman, Natalie Kerris, put it this way: “iPhone 5 supports simultaneous voice and data on GSM-based 3G and LTE networks. It is not yet possible to do simultaneous voice and data on networks that use CDMA for voice and LTE for data in a single radio design.”

Essentially, Apple would have to put a third antenna in the CDMA iPhone just for this feature, and that’s just not feasible for mass production. LTE will also eventually support simultaneous talk and surf in a single radio. Apple is betting on the future rather than accommodating for the present.

Then get the Galaxy S3. It's not that complicated. Find what you like, and buy it.

Also, no one on Verizon has ever been able to call and surf data at the same time unless you are on wifi.  CDMA has always had this limitation, so having the limitation in LTE won't change anything.

As others have said, this is not true!  All LTE phones, with the apparent exception of the iPhone 5, can do this when in LTE areas (and even the AT&T iPhone 5 can't do this, falls back to a slower data network).  A handful of phones, initially the Thunderbolt, are also able to do this when on 3G.

The reason you cannot talk and surf at the same time is because in order to make the iPhone 5 as small as possible Apple decided to use 1 chip not 2 for CDMA/LTE.  It cannot use data and voice at the same time.  This has nothing to do with LTE's capabilities.  LTE itself can be configured on Verizon's side to run voice calls over the data network (this is indeed where they are heading) and eventually an iPhone (this or maybe another one in the future) will make calls over the LTE network and not the CDMA network when Verizon completely switches over to LTE.  The reason AT&T iPhone 5 CAN do this is because GSM has always had that capability.

as napereira (and a few others have pointed out), apple simply cheaped out on a second chip/antenna. maybe they did this for size or form factor? however, i believe it had more to do with cost, since many androids have put 2 separate radios in them. my thunderbolt was the first LTE phone on the market and is 18 months old. it has no problem handling voice and data simultaneously. it's simple.....droid does....iphone does not.

Doesn't make any sense to me. My girlfriend has an iPhone 4 with Sprint and she was able to do this today. Of course it's not LTE but it's still doing it on CDMA

if she did it, then she was using wifi while on the phone. the cdma (or LTE) iphone simply can not v

oice and data at the same time, unless you're using wifi.

honestly... to say no real LTE because it doesn't do Voice and Data at the same time really need to brush up on network technology.  Not single network alone can do both it's either or.  To achieve both at the same time you need two different radios running at the same time which I am guessing the iPhone is using an all-in-one solution instead of multiple radios(hence why the iPhone is thin from top to bottom, and not like the razor(where the top is fat).
